OneDrive KFM (Known Folder Move)

As technology has advanced within Microsoft, our approach to user data backup has also evolved. We’ve moved from employing scripts/USB to back up local folders to implementing folder redirection, and now we are transitioning to the use of OneDrive. This approach will further reduce the risk of data loss by moving local data into cloud storage.

So why OneDrive?

There are many advantages of moving or redirecting Windows known folders (Desktop, ocuments, Pictures, Screenshots, and Camera Roll) to Microsoft OneDrive for the users in your domain:

  • Your users can continue using the folders they’re familiar with. They don’t have to change their daily work habits to save files to OneDrive.
  • Saving files to OneDrive backs up your users’ data in the cloud and gives them access to their files from any device.
  • The cloud backup feature comes for free with the E3 or E5 license, saving a lot of money in long term.
  • Easy to implement for existing windows environment with Group policy for on premise device or azure ad joined devices enrolled in Intune MDM.
  • It comes with a standard storage capacity of 5TB per user and can expand to even storage*.
(Microsoft will provide up to 5 TB of initial OneDrive storage per user based on the default quota for the tenant. Additional storage can be requested by contacting Microsoft support)

***In the following post, we will explore deploying OneDrive using business license for On premise machine and azure ad joined machines.
